Planetsafe Planners sells the only 100% Earth friendly erasable white boards, calendars, planners and organizers in the world. I’m Stacey D’Amico, and this line of green products, of which I am very proud, is my brain-child. Inspired by Oprah, after watching her show featuring environmentally friendly products, the idea for a wall planner that could be completely recycled was conceived.
As an artist, and as a teacher of art, it is natural for me to organize visually. Hang that organizational system on the wall, where it’s in my face to greet me each morning - it gets my attention. When I can manipulate colors applied with dry erase markers and multi-colored sticky notes like paints on canvas - I’m in my element for sure. Organizing lesson plans and tracking progress on class projects and student assignments has made wall planners an integral part of my life for many years.
We are living in the Information Age. Appointments, tasks and to do lists force us all to become organization nuts to bring some order to our chaotic life styles. Wall planners have always been my personal tool of choice. I truly enjoy working with them. My talents in art and my penchant for easy-to-do organizational systems got my head spinning with all sorts of ideas for better wall planner designs and more user friendly layouts. That would be simple. The tough part, as I was about to find out, was producing these white board calenders to be 100% biodegradable.
I turned to my husband for help. He owns and operates a small manufacturing company that often delves into this type of planet friendly product. Film, paper, adhesive and ink were researched. We knew that we could acquire recycled paper manufactured from 100% post consumer waste, and this would be better than what our competitors were offering: Only 30% post consumer waste. Another big success came when we discovered an environmentally friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable plant based ink that would look great when used to print our stuff. We even found a type of film that was also made from plants, and would be the ideal replacement for all the plastic that was currently being used. This biodegradable film actually performs better and lasts longer than the polyethylene that our competition uses. It should, it’s ten times as expensive!
The final obstacle to manufacturing a 100% biodegradable product turned out to be the adhesive needed to bond the film to the paper. “90% Earth friendly” was just starting to sound acceptable to me when after searching the entire country, and ultimately all over the world -turned up nothing. Fortunately, a local company came by the shop, confident that they could come up with an adhesive that would meet our planet-safe specifications. After a couple more months of testing, we had the plant based adhesive we wanted, rendering our wall planners 100% green.
So there you have it, from conception to birth, the story of the development of a 100% recyclable wall planner.
